Sounds & Lights to Repel Bats: Does Any of It Actually Work?

In one word — no. Lights and sounds to not work to repel bats. They will work to wake up a colony of sleeping bats during the day, however, and it might even work as a strategy to get them out of the attic. What lights and sounds can't do, on the other hand, is keep bats out. Getting them out isn't actually that difficult — keeping them out is the hardest part of the battle.

Just walking up to a sleeping bat will be enough to wake it up and kickstart it into action. Bats will always try to fly away from predators — including humans — that come close to them. Just like many other nuisance wildlife that takes the same approach (almost all of them), the bats will just come right back as soon as your back is turned. Sounds and lights will have the same effect. If you head up into the attic and turn the light on, or install a radio to constantly play music, the bats would likely move to another spot that isn't where the light can be seen or the music heard. This doesn't always mean OUT of your attic, sadly. It can sometimes just mean to another spot in the attic — perhaps the other side of the attic, where the noise and lights can't quite reach.

When you're up against bats, you need an approach that offers better results than just a perhaps. Perhaps those bats might leave. Perhaps they'll find another deeper spot in your attic. Perhaps the noise and lights will drive the colony into wall cavities so that you can never get them out. There are too many things that go wrong when you rely on something else to do the problem for you, and that's what you're doing when you use a repellent or deterrent. Don't waste your cash on those devices. You'll have much better results with exclusion; although we don't recommend doing that without some assistance from the professionals.
